Mount Edgecumbe Events – September

Going bats at Mount Edgcumbe

Saturday 4 September
8pm

Join us for a nocturnal adventure and let our colonies of bats be your guide. With rare species calling Mount Edgcumbe home, you could be in for a real treat with this expedition. Meeting on the terrace at the front of the house at 8pm, the walk will take approximately two to three hours and finish off with hot soup and cost £5 per person. Please make sure that you wrap up warm and wear suitable footwear for the walk. Due to limited spaces, booking is essential.


Family bushcraft day

Saturday 11 September
10am

Enjoy a family adventure with our experienced rangers learning all about the great outdoors. Learn how to build a shelter, light a fire without matches and even forage for food!

All children must be accompanied by an adult with no more than two children per adult. Tickets are 1 adult + 1 child – £10, 1 adult + 2 children – £13, 2 adults + 1 child £17. Meet at the Penlee Battery car park at 10am wearing suitable clothing and footwear, you should bring a packed lunch and drink with you. The day will run until 3pm. There are limited spaces on this event, so please book early to avoid disappointment.


Historic buildings

Thursday 9 September
1.30pm

Guided walk with archaeologist and steward, James at 1.30pm from the terrace in front of the House. Learn about the history of some of our recently restored buildings and look at some fascinating recent studies of the 18th century English Garden House. The excursion will take approximately 1.5 hours and costs £5 per person. Spaces are limited so please book early.


Weaving wonders workshop**

This workshop will allow you to explore the traditional art of weaving using recycled and contemporary materials and techniques.

The day will start at 10.30am and run until 3.30pm and costs £30 per person. Small group numbers ensure time and space to develop your ideas to the full, whether a beginner or more experienced artist. Booking for this workshop is essential. Most materials will be provided, but a list of any additional requirements will be provided when booking.

Tea and coffee will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch or the Stables Café will be open for refreshments.

Back for another year, join the Friends of Mount Edgcumbe for this ever popular event at Mount Edgcumbe. The event starts at 11am. For car exhibitors contact 01752 822850 or for stalls contact The Events Officer at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice on 01726 66869.


Forest school

Monday 2, 9 and 23 August
9.45am to 2.15pm

Forest Friends is an alternative to a traditional childcare facility and uses the Forest School ethos and principles to deliver a fun packed, practical woodland activity.

The sessions aim to teach children about nature through playing wild woodland games, exploration, wild food foraging, making dens and shelters, learning basic bush craft skills and camp fire cooking!

Forest Friends is run independently of Mount Edgcumbe Park by fully qualified and insured Forest School leaders. All leaders hold current CRB and first aid certificates.

The cost is £15 per child or £25 for two siblings. Children will need a packed lunch, drink, warm waterproof clothing, and stout shoes or wellingtons as the sessions will run come rain or shine.

Edgcumbe explorer

Saturday 7 August
10.30am

Enjoy a fun day exploring the grounds of Mount Edgcumbe. Be transported back to the time of early explorers with only a map, landmarks and our clue sheet to guide you!

Explorer packs cost £5 each and can be collected on the day. Collect your explorer pack from the Cremyll Lodge Shop just inside the Cremyll gate from 10.30am, and remember to wear comfy footwear and layers.


From cover to cover workshop**

10.30am to 3.30pm

This is an opportunity to create a beautifully bound book with stitched pages and a fabric cover for use as a journal, artists’ book or diary.

The day will start at 10.30 and run until 3.30pm and costs £30 per person. Small group numbers ensure time and space to develop your ideas to the full, whether a beginner or more experienced artist. Booking for the workshop is essential. Most materials will be provided, but a list of any additional requirements will be provided when booking.

Tea and coffee will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch or the Stables Café will be open for refreshments.


Bushcraft overnight camp – adults only

Enjoy an adventure with our experienced rangers learning all about the great outdoors. Learn how to build a shelter, light a fire without matches, forage for food and cook what you find!

Tickets are £50 per person. Meet at the Penlee Battery car park at 10am wearing suitable clothing and footwear. You should bring a packed lunch and drink with you, a sleeping bag and warm clothing. The day will run until approx 3pm on Sunday. There are limited spaces on this event, so please book early to avoid disappointment. A full list of things you need to bring for your overnight stay will be supplied to you at time of booking.


Garden tour

Wednesday 18 August
1.30pm

Enjoy the delights of the formal gardens here at Mount Edgcumbe with a guided tour by one of our experienced staff. Learn how the gardens were originally created, and who designed them, where the fascinating shell seat came from and who influenced the overall design here at Mount Edgcumbe. With an amazing variety of rare and unusual plants to see on the tour, your day will be full of surprises!

Meeting at Cremyll Gates at 1:30pm, the event will last approximately two hours and costs £3 per person. Due to limited space, booking is essential.

Join us for story time with Patrick from 2pm to 3pm. Children will enjoy the traditional and timeless tales of princesses, knights and adventure. Suitable for children aged five to nine and their parents. Spaces are limited so book now to avoid disappointment. Cost £1 per child.


Mad about moths

Friday 27 August
7.45pm

Over 2000 kinds of moth inhabit the British Isles, most of which you’ll only seen if you go trapping at night. Come and join our experts at this night time event and see what moths they can trap and identify, you never know we may find some rarities!

Meet at the park gates at Cremyll at 7.45pm, the event should last around three hours and tea and biscuits will be provided. Suitable shoes should be worn and bring some warm clothing, it can get chilly during the night. The cost is £3 per person, tickets should be pre-booked.

Murder mystery evening

Things that go bump in the night… for something a little more exciting why not join the Candlelight Theatre Company here at Mount Edgcumbe for cocktails, a three course Hollywood themed dinner (BYOB) and….. murder most horrid!

Meeting at Mount Edgcumbe for a cocktail at 7pm you will have the opportunity to meet your fellow sleuths and plan how you’re going to solve the murder. The cost of the evening is £35 per person, groups welcome. Booking is a must for this popular event, so don’t miss out – call today.

Here is a brief summary of what’s happening in Plymouth this summer. It will be updated as we go along.
As a city Plymouth is unique in the number and range of events which it hosts throughout the summer months from May until September. To capture the spirit, and help co-ordination of the events for visitors, the Plymouth Summer Festival  was created a number of years ago.

Traffic arrangements for the Barbican. 4th May – 10th May

The Athenaeum Lodge Guest House has received this information about the traffic arrangements for the Barbican between the 4th May – 10th May.

This is a notice from Plymouth Transport and Highways.

Notice is hereby given that the driving of vehicles will be prohibited in the following areas:-

The order comes into force at 0900hrs on 4th May until 2200hrs on 10th May 2009.

(1) Southside Street from its junction with Notte Street to its junction with the Barbican.

(2) The Barbican from its junction with Southside Street southwards for a distance of 135 metres.

(3) Parade for its entire length east of the boundary between No’s 18 and 19 Parade.

The alternative route is via Notte Street, Hoe Approach, Hoe Road, Lambhay Hill, The Barbican.

The appropriate traffic signs will be displayed whilst the Barbican Internation Jazz Festival takes place.
